Despite having handing in his Tardis keys, Tennant – toweringly tall, reed thin, mind-blowingly cute – patiently stops for autographs and smiles for photos with awestruck kids.

‘mind-blowingly cute’

We noticed that you had worked with David Tennant on a couple of occasions prior to this movie, what is the former Doctor (yes we are whovians!) like to work with and what made you think of him for this role?
David is an exceptional human being. His acting ability is astounding to me. He always has a perfect grasp of the text and the character. He has immaculate comedic timing – a rare gift. He’s inventive. And he’s innately technically so proficient that he always knows exactly where he needs to go, how to repeat what he just did exactly – and what everyone else should be doing too. He’s also the most delightful human being. He hasn’t changed at all since becoming famous (I worked with him when he was an unknown actor). He’s always kind and friendly to everyone. When we were filming on location – often by the end of the day people would have learnt where we were and there’d be a queue of kids waiting for his autograph. Now, we work very long hours, and you can imagine that after a 12 hour day you might just want to go straight home – David would always sign every for one for every child and I walked past once and heard that he was asking them questions about themselves!

It was easy to think of him for this role – we needed someone who could be funny, charismatic and also truthful. And I knew that he had all that in bucketful’s.

This morning, David Tennant is stuck with a pedalo. A swan-shaped pedalo. On the opposite bank, an assorted group of technicians, tourists and Doctor Who fans have gathered to watch the actor as he attempts to keep upright on the water (there’s a diver or two in there in case he doesn’t succeed).

He’d pass by me and I’d realise he’d moved my bag from my left hand to my right hand, because I’d previously had it in my right hand. He was practically doing people’s make-up. Both of them were like that.
